Representative Mike Levin: Reflecting on Recent Work in CA-49
I'm working to protect Medicaid, support veterans, and pass bipartisan immigration reform
Dear Neighbor,
I want to take a minute to share what I’ve been working on for our district. There’s a lot happening that directly impacts our health care and safety.
Here are some highlights from my work and issues that impact our communities.
Protecting Medicaid
July 30th marked the 60th anniversary of Medicaid becoming law. Medicaid has helped millions of Americans access life-saving health care and live with peace of mind. But it is now under threat. In early July, President Trump signed into law a Republican budget that makes the largest cuts to Medicaid in history. The Republican budget law will cause 15 million Americans to lose health coverage and slashes crucial funds to hospitals, all to give tax breaks to the ultrawealthy.
I held a round table with health care providers and patients whose lives will be impacted by these devastating cuts. Medicaid has been a lifeline for 60 years and I’m fighting to ensure it stays that way.

A Real Shot at Bipartisan Immigration Reform
Rep. Mike Levin Discusses Immigration Reform
I’m proud to be part of a bipartisan group of 20 Republicans and Democrats who introduced the Dignity Act, a long-overdue step toward real immigration reform. The bill protects Dreamers, strengthens our borders, fixes our asylum process, and creates a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants who pay taxes, pass background checks, and contribute to our communities.
This issue is personal to me. My maternal grandparents came here from Mexico as children. They worked hard, followed the rules, and built better lives. We need a system that reflects that same balance of security and humanity today.
You can read more about the Dignity Act here and read my San Diego Union Tribune op-ed about why we must lead with strength and compassion on immigration here.
Protecting VA Health Care
House Republicans' proposed VA budget allocates 75% of all new funding to private health care providers, not to the VA health care system. While private providers can be helpful in certain situations, this move threatens to dismantle the trusted VA health care system that millions of veterans rely on. Defunding the VA will lead to worse case and higher costs. I'm standing up to protect and strengthen VA care for those who serve. You can read by full op-ed on this issue published on Military.com here.
Ending Sneaky Recurring Campaign Charges
Last month, I introduced the bipartisan Uncheck the Box Act to protect people from being tricked into making recurring campaign donations. No one should be signed up for recurring charges without their clear consent. This bill bans the use of so-called “pre-checked boxes” that sign people up to make multiple contributions to political campaigns when they think they’re only making one. This is about protecting the financial security of Americans and improving trust in our political system. You can read more about this bill here.
Telephone Town Hall
Over 10,500 callers tuned in for my 125th town hall on July 30th to ask questions about the big issues of the day and my work to represent you. Many of you asked about the Republican budget law and potential impacts on health care.
You can listen to the entire telephone town hall here.
Honoring Michael Meyers as July’s Constituent of the Month
I’m proud to recognize Michael Meyers of Carlsbad as our July Constituent of the Month for his leadership in creating North County San Diego’s first goalball team for the blind and visually impaired. After losing his vision to a degenerative eye disease, Michael turned adversity into action by building a space where others with visual impairments can stay active, complete, and build community. His work promotes inclusion, health, and empowerment across our district.
